Spread over the emerald waters of the Gulf of Bac Bo, the legendary Ha Long Bay covers the regions of Ha Long City, the township of Cam Pha and a part of the island district of Van Don. The bay encompasses 1,969 islands of various sizes, 989 of which have been given names. The natural beauty of Halong Bay has long been praised and was first recognized as the World Heritage in 1994 by UNESCO. In 2000, UNESCO recognized it as the World Heritage for the second time for its geographical and geomorphologic values. This confirms the global premier value of Halong Bay.
Two main kinds of islands can be distin-guished: limestone and schist, which formartion would date back to 250 or 280 million years ago. Viewed from above, Halong Bay resembles a geographic work of art. While navigating on the green clear waters, you feel lost in a legendary world of stone islands, which shapes change depending on the angle and on the light. Dau Go Grotto Halong Bay
The grotto is on Driftwood Island, formerly known as Canh Doc Island. The name Driftwood Grotto comes from the popular story of the resistance war against the Yuan- Mongol aggressors. In a decisive battle, Tran Hung Dao was given an order to prepare many sharp wooden stakes to be planted on the riverbed of the Bach Dang River. They were stored in the grotto, where the remain¬ing wooden pieces were found.
Tuan Chau Island Halong Bay

So Nau Grotto Halong Bay
Some 2-3 km southeast of Trong Mai Islet lies Bo Nau Grotto. This vaulted grotto covers 200m2. The name Bo Nau is associated with the fact that pelicans often take shelter here. The floor of the grotto is wide and flat, but not deep. Stalactites fall down from the roof of the grotto in different clusters. Meanwhile stalag-mites grow up in different shapes and layers.
Bai Tho Mountain Halong Bay
Bai Tho Mountain Halong Bay is 106 m high. It runs along the coast, half on land and half in the sea. Sailing in the bay, one or two hundred meters from the mountain, one can see a poem carved on a flat stone cliff. In 1468, Emperor Le Thanh Tong, who was also a poet, made an inspection tour of the North-East region.

Halong Bay in final round of New 7 Wonders
Halong Bay has received a certificate to participate in the final round of voting for the honour of being named as one of the New 7 Wonders of the World. Bernard Weber, Chairman of the New Open World organisation, which is hosting the vote, handed over the certificate to Quang Ninh province on Sept. 27.
Weber said Halong Bay’s natural beauty made a strong impression on him the first time he visited the site. He also promised to vote for Halong to become a new natural wonder of the world.
